Calling All Photographers!

Wikipedia describes an amateur photographer as “one who practices photography as a hobby or passion and not necessarily for profit. The quality of some amateur work is comparable to that of many professionals. Amateur photography is often pre-eminent in photographic subjects which have little prospect for commercial use or reward”.

It goes on to say amateur photography has grown in popularity with the advancement of photographic equipment and especially with the introduction of the cell phone’s capability of producing high-quality photographs.

What hasn’t changed is the reason we take pictures, capturing moments in time that are very special; memories that we want to hold on to or share with family and friends.

The BHCC photo contest has given our resident photographers the opportunity to share some of those special times with all of us and we have had the good fortune to be able to see and enjoy what they saw.

Over the last year and a half, we have had 6 competitions, over 500 entries that drew over 1500 votes for their favourite. The quality of the photographs has been excellent. In defining the term “amateur photography” as Wikipedia says, “The quality of some amateur work is comparable to that of many professionals” and our winners have certainly proved that statement to be true.

Seriously consider being a participant in our next photo competition when it is announced in the eNEWS, either as a contributor or voter. Your support will go a long way to making each and every competition a great success.
